Crimson Commander

After our Percheron team passed away, we heard of a foal they'd had together several years ago. He was an intact stallion, having been left that way for his color, but he was getting to be a bit too much to handle for his owners, so Tamarack Park snapped him up quick as a flash! We spent about a week training Claret to collect, another couple of weeks actually collecting, and then we had the Doc out to slice the nuts off 'im. Cruel? Perhaps. Necessary? Definitely. Now we're looking forward to finishing him both under saddle and in harness; he seems to have inherited all the good physical traits of his parents, so he might very well be a successful pulling horse!

He's at least 10 years old in this picture; no more than 13, though.

Build: Claret is built like a tank -- if a tank was redesigned to be not only functional, but fashionable. His neck and head are set high on deeply-sloped shoulders, giving him both a regal air and a good pulling frame. His back is a hair on the short side, and his hindquarters are so developed that Niels once joked about getting him tested for HYPP. He has long, clean legs and big, strong feet. He'd be best complemented by a mare who, depending on the intended purpose of the foal, is a little more obviously uphill than Claret is; it wouldn't do his progeny any ill to have refined, elegant dams, too -- just in case his thickness is the only thing he passes on!
Temperament: Claret has this weird mixture of his parents' personalities. On the one hand, he really, really wants to please, and it's almost painful to see him confused -- when he doesn't know what to do to please the human handling/riding him, he gets really tense and frustrated. It's at times like these that he's his most dangerous, since his bulk could be devastating if it gets out of control. It's for this reason that Claret seems to flourish best when given a straightforward request; we're not sure he's stupid, but he certainly doesn't pick things up quickly. In any case, he's a puppy-dog of a horse, but perhaps has a very limited tolerance for his own frustration.
